On March 4, the Hawaii State Board of Nursing gave Chaminade University the approval needed to officially launch the nursing program scheduled to begin in the Fall 2010 semester.
“This welcomed approval means that in August, our first students on track towards earning their Bachelor of Science degree in nursing will begin classes,” said Chaminade Dean of Nursing, Stephanie Genz, EdD, MSN, RN.
The Sallie Y. Miyawaki School of Nursing curriculum will include patient-center care, inter-professional teams, patient safety, professionalism, lifespan, and end-of-life care.
The school is named in honor of the late wife of Dr. Edison Miyawaki, who endowed $5 million to the nursing program in November 2009.
The program will be housed in the Dr. Lawrence K.W. and Mrs. BoHing Chan Tseu Center for Nurse Education, located in Henry Hall. The center will include two skills laboratories, computer and instructional rooms, state-of-the-art human simulator suite, patient laboratory, faculty offices, and newly renovated teaching research laboratories.
J. Michael Windsor donated $100,000 for the first nursing scholarship in memory of his late wife, Mary Windsor, a former nurse who served on the university’s board of governors.
“The nursing profession gives our students excellent career opportunities in a dynamic field where they can serve with significance,” said Chaminade President Bro. Bernie Ploeger. “This makes the nursing vocation a perfect fit, well-aligned with our mission and identity as a university whose goal is to prepare students for life, careers, and for service.”
