Self-serve yogurt! I salute you, Mr. Frozen-Yogurt-Weigh-and-Top-With-Your-Faves Inventor!
Oh how delighted I was to speed down Ward Avenue and get my fro-yo fix to finally stop the chocolate demon demanding that I satisfy my sinful desire for creamy, tarty, chocolaty, yummy-dummy yogurt from Menchie’s in the Ward Warehouse.
Got a chocolate, cream and vanilla craving? Menchie’s is the perfect place to humor your yearning with Cable Car Chocolate, New York Cheesecake, Very Vanilla, Irish Mint, Caramel Fudge, Cookies and Cream and much more.
For those who appreciate frozen yogurt for the non-fat aspect, don’t fret. While there is not as wide of a selection as other frozen yogurt spots, there are many fruity, tarty, sorbet flavors including a regional special called Hawaiian Delight, a fruit punch sorbet.
Once I filled my bowl with four different yogurts — Cable Car Chocolate, New York Cheesecake, Irish Mint, and (yes, and) Caramel Fudge — I moved over to the “Creamy Top” station where I capped off my concoction with caramel syrup and Hershey’s fudge. Yes, I was in a chocolate mood this evening.
With my bowl now drizzled with a little bit of all the inner desires of my creamy top, I moved on to “Snackage,” where Menchie’s offers all types of toppings from cereal, gummies and candy galore, to red velvet cake and brownies, to mochi balls and fresh fruit.
To pair with my chocolate, caramel and mint choices, I piled on some of my favorite toppings to match, cookie dough, mini M&M’s, mochi balls, brownie and macadamia nuts. Oh baby, I was in a happy, happy place! This particular yogurt combination, however, could do without Cable Car Chocolate and more of Caramel Fudge.
Helpful hint: Menchie’s offers a buy-two-and-get-the-second-half-off special from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Yogurtland — a place for ice cream and frozen yogurt. Yummy! Let’s not forget that Yogurtland is also paired with the cute anime Tokidoki, which many of the customers rave about.
When you walk in, you can’t help but notice the bright colored fruits on the walls and the calming atmosphere. The friendly staff greets you with a smile, and the humming machines of yogurt entice you to fill your cup with every flavor.
There are more than a dozen flavors, and you can sample every one before you fill your cup. The flavors include plain yogurt, strawberry, vanilla, cheesecake, coffee, pistachio, mint and cookies and cream, just to name a few.
As I eagerly tasted every flavor, my hopes of a pleasant yogurt experience started to diminish. Apparently, the flavors were not as appealing as the ambiance. With a sigh, I finally chose strawberry, vanilla and cheesecake.
Although I knew that the flavors weren’t exactly explosive, I kept my hopes up as I made my way to the topping station. Maybe there I would find something that would give the yogurt an extra boost.
But again, I was disappointed. Even though there were tons of toppings to choose from — gummy bears, mochi balls, M&M’s, cheesecake bites, brownies, cookie dough, and cinnamon twist – the station did not look alluring. Someone had left the station messy and some of the toppings looked like they were melted.
With the little hope I had left, I topped my yogurt with cheesecake bites, mochi balls, and gummy bears. It cost a little less than $5 and the price increased my faith.
However, when I took my first bite, my mouth didn’t burst into a million orgasms like I thought it would. Instead, the taste had faded the little hope I had left. The flavors didn’t scream authentic vanilla and strawberry cheesecake but rather artificial vanilla and strawberry cheesecake.
With my heart broken in two, I made my way to my truck and noticed a yellow ticket on my window. WTF!? Apparently, Yogurtland only owns about five parking spaces in the parking lot behind it and the rest you have to pay for. How was I supposed to know that?
Curse you, Yogurtland! Curse you for not filling my mouth with excitement and for my $40 ticket!

Just the word “ice cream” makes me happy yet guilty all at the same time. Especially when I think of the amount of calories that I will be consuming and the money I’ll be spending if I want to get a few toppings with it. Tutti Frutti, came to the rescue of my weekly craving for better quality fro-yo and great customer service.
Tutti Frutti is a new spot on Kapahulu Avenue between Papa John’s and Zippy’s. It is a cozy little place that will indulge your sweet tooth with 12 different flavors: Death by Chocolate, Coffee, Taro-bly delicious (one of my picks), Green Tea, Vanilla, Strawberry Field, Tutti Frutti (their signature flavor and very yummy!), Must be Coconut, Blue Berrillicious, Kiwi, Original Tart (my favorite!) and Lychee; each of them tasty, light and cold (not melting in containers like the other ice cream parlors).
Tutti Frutti is tiny but charming with little tables, colorful and brightly decorated walls, the cutest pastel colored spoons and the most important aspect of any food business - immaculately clean and organized establishment.
The staff was friendly and will provide you with a little disposable cup to sample any flavor you like. The open sample policy will make you feel welcome. This is simply a chill and fun environment.
I ended up with over 6 flavors in my cup and a bunch of fresh sliced strawberries, little pieces of mochi and coconut flakes. To my surprise, I did not go over my $4.00 mark. I think there is no better deal than this if you are a yogurt freak like me.
