As I climbed nearer to the summit, completely winded (blaming the elevation and not my physical condition), I paused to take a picture of the valley I had just overcome. It was a worthwhile challenge.

Unfortunate photographic evidence that an older couple blazed passed me on the trail. Not only did they beat me to the top, but they also started well after me. Yikes. In my defense: LOOK AT THAT CLIMB!

I made it. It really took everything out of me. I think I was more concerned with how heavily I was going to consume alcohol upon my return than the spectacular view. Perhaps this is partially the reason I was so exhausted, huh? Regardless, it was stunning.

Upon my return to civilization, I did what any classic American boy would do: I got a ½ pound Burger on the Edge and a beer. Immediately replacing all the calories I melted away during the Kuli‘ou‘ou Ridge hike, it was a pleasant conclusion to both the Thanksgiving weekend and my last hike of the month. I advise anyone considering reaching the summit of the Ridge to be in good physical condition, bring ample amounts of water and plenty of time to spare.
