Here’s the scoop of the most frequented places that students from Chaminade University of Honolulu like to hang out when they are not in school.
Not surprisingly, most students favor the beach, shopping malls, and bars.
From a survey of 100 students on campus, here’s where students go during their free time:
THE BEACH
Sandy Beach — From tiny bikinis to muscular bodies and achieving that perfect tan, many of our Chaminade participants chose as their first favorite place: The sunny beaches on Oahu. Coming in at No. 1 is Sandy Beach.
Also known as Sandy’s, this beach is located in East Honolulu near Hawaii Kai. A majority of voters said it is their favorite spot to catch a good wave or just simply relax and check out people in their relaxing time. “Sandy’s beach because its gorgeous. Its escaping from the city kind of and it’s a beautiful drive and view, I love the sand at Sandy’s too!” said Shannon Sadler, a junior.
North Shore and Waikiki —Beaches on the North Shore and Waikiki tied for second. North Shore beaches give people the chance to escape from the city life while experiencing the gorgeous but long drive through the country part of O’ahu.
On the other hand, Waikiki is in the city and easy to get to for those Chaminade students who do not have their own transportation.
Lanikai —In third place was Lanikai Beach, which was chosen because its amazing views, beautiful water and lots of marine life.
THE MALLS
From the latest fashion styles to swiping your credit cards, where shopaholics indulge — it’s shopping time!
Ala Moana Center — It’s a perfect getaway for releasing the stress that comes with being a student, even if that requires spending some of your savings. The best mall, according to students, is Ala Moana Center. Who doesn’t love to shop, especially if you are shopping in the most famous outdoor mall in the country?
Ward Centre — Chosen for its fabulous shopping and convenient movie theater. You can shop ‘til you drop or take a break and watch the latest films out in theaters.
Pearlridge Center — Similar to Ward Centre but inconvenient for Chaminade students because it is farther from town, although very convenient to our commuting members. Like Ward, Pearlridge boasts a movie theater, food court and plenty of shops.
THE BARS
Do you like piña coladas or getting caught in the rain?
Happy hours and social scenes were preferred as the third-most popular hangout spot.
Dave & Buster’s — Its plethora of arcade games and a pool hall offer students the perfect environment to release some energy and eat good American cuisine. Plus, their rooftop bar has great music to shake your booty to.
Hawaiian Brian’s — This place is similar to Dave & Buster’s but more suitable for the under-21 crowd, and (on a good night) less crowded.
Level 4 — Good for socializing, dancing, and drinking; even with the weirdness of their floor plan, it still attracts those partiers.
Beaches, the mall, and bars are the top three choices for Chaminade students. So, if you are new to the island, we say “e komo mai” and check out these places to start a fun semester!
