Concerts
Mos Def 5/21 Pipeline

Pussycat Dolls 6/18 Blaisdell
I humbly thank the Master of the Universe for allowing the Pussycat Dolls to come to Hawai’i.  High-ticket prices (between $60-80,) allow the Dolls to play at the Blaisdell.  These tickets are definitely worth every cent.  Man, I wish my girlfriend was hot like them.  Check them out.  They’re riding motorcycles.  Did you hear their remix of the title track “Jai Ho” from 2008’s Academy Award Best Picture, “Slumdog Millionaire”?  I’m so glad they put some American into an Indian song.  “America, fuck yeah!” -CV

Events
Mamma Mia! The Musical 5/12-24 Blaisdell

Cinco de Mayo Festival Downtown 5/5
Cinco de Mayo is surpassed only by St. Patrick’s Day as an opportunity for all the different races of our country to have a daylong adoption of a single ethnicity in the name of public belligerence. But what the fifth of May lacks in college frat boy enthusiasm, it more than makes up for in other celebration logistics. Traditional food: burritos vs. corned beef and cabbage? Traditional game: piñata vs. hurling? Traditional garb: sombrero vs. kilt? Win, win, win for Mexico. Honoluluians can celebrate the day by attending an evening festival downtown. It promises to be an entertaining juxtaposition between cultural education and lushes proclaiming their love for Jose Cuervo. -MK

Movies
Terminator: Salvation 5/21
In the first Terminator release in 18 years (we won’t count that “Rise of the Machines” nonsense,) we’re faced with Christian Bale instead of the Governator.  Bale, accused of assault by both his mother and sister, will be playing the infamous John Connor, the leader of the human assault against the machines.  Noted for teaching the Terminator such memorable lines as “Hasta la vista, baby,” and “Chill out, dickwad,” Connor will now attempt to lead the human race to freedom.  “Terminator Salvation” will definitely be a film to remember.  It’s rumored that a CG version of Schwarzenegger will be digitally imposed in some clips.  We can only hope.  It jumps on May 21.  -CV

Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix 5/25
A relative unknown stateside, upbeat French rock band Phoenix has recently started to garner some exposure in the states. Coming off an extremely strong performance on Saturday Night Live (which can be viewed at http://www.pitchfork.com/forkcast/12653-lisztomania-and-1901-live-on-snl/), the hype surrounding the release of their fourth album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is reaching high levels. The first single, 1901 (which is available as a free download at http://www.wearephoenix.com), shows that, while the CD is named for Mozart, it will not be the contemplative appreciation attributed to classical music that is the initial response. Rather, this album will make it hard for listeners not to jump off their seats and dance with reckless abandon. –MK
