Unfortunately, the Kokua Festival will not be happening this year. The annual event that began in 2004, decided they will “take a break” for reasons unknown. This event has been a success for the Hawaiian Islands. Last year, the two-day festival of music and environmental awareness, sold out the first day tickets went on sale.
Lil Wayne has a show at the Blaisdell Arena on April 4th. “The Best Rapper Alive,” as he is so fond of calling himself, can be seen for as little as $60. For those that can afford it, this should be an unbelievable concert.
Speaking from my personal viewpoint, this concert was circled on my calendar since I heard of its inception back in late 2008. However, the performance presented to the crowd at Loft Gallery and Lounge on Saturday, Feb. 21, showed remarkably little of a band that is renowned for its memorable live acts.
India Café is the perfect place to go for a restaurant that offers cultured cuisine with a bit of kick. Serving traditional dishes, the restaurant is able to embrace the beauty of Indian culture and the flavors of its food. Well aware (and anticipating) that the Indian culture is known for incorporating spices with their meals, I didn’t leave disappointed.
Going by the name Asobi Seksu (Japanese for “casual sex”), this New York indie rock band has taken a turn on their style of music. Originally known for shoegazing (a subgenre of alternative rock), they have dropped the guitars, band members and even the British-inspired style, replacing it with a bubbly pop-synth sound.
Rock band trio Pepper proved that there is no place like home, as they played to a sold out show at Pipeline on Feb. 21. Originally form Kailua-Kona, they received a very big warm welcome from their fans here on Oahu. The last time Pepper played here in the islands was in 2007 during Bob Fest. In their words to the packed out crowd, “It has been too long!”
The release of music festival lineups is upon us again, and 2009 has already made quite an impression on festival-goers nationwide. Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, two of the most popular music festivals in the country, are rapidly approaching with unbelievable band lists. People travel far and wide to attend both of these events.
