A Christmas Story

Jesus was the reason We (Chaminade University) were in the Kaimuki Christmas Parade (“Kaimuki Christmas parade brings spirit,” Fall 2008, Issue 4, Dec. 8).

While we were not a huge contingent, there were about 20 of us including our Chaminade University banner carriers, a huge banner stating "Jesus Is The Reason For the Season,” Mary and Joseph (well, Andrea Guerrero and David Arevelo) and baby Jesus (OK, actually my 3-year-old granddaughter's baby doll) and about 15 others of us also including Brother Jerry Bommer, Brother Luis Gamboa, Brother Tom Spring, at least a dozen students and me.

Check out our bulletin boards (one in Henry Hall near the stairs leading to Clarence T.C. Ching Hall and the other near our offices in Clarence T.C. Ching Hall) for pictures of our parade experience!

I’m not usually picky about comments made in your paper.  I think you guys are doing a great job.  But the article gives the impression that we did not participate, but hopefully would at some point in the future.  We've participated every year I've been at Chaminade, which is for the past eight years.

Merry Christmas!  And again I really do enjoy reading the Silversword.

Shopping for Chaminade

When shopping colleges for my son in 2007, I used the Internet quite extensively and liked the Chaminade Web site but found the campus newspaper online and later discovered the print newspaper was lacking in content and the publications were sporadic.

I am happy to see that the online Silversword is a regular publication and is nicely put together.  I am able to visit Honolulu once a year, and the online Silversword is the best way for parents to keep in touch with what is going on at Chaminade. Keep up the good work.

Bill’s Just Sayin’

Relative to the commentary on the Women’s Basketball team by Matt Sanders (“I’m Just Saying’: Women’s Basketball Recruits,” Fall 2008, Issue 4, Dec. 8): While they are winless, the team has been competitive in many of the games played this season.

True, basketball is a game of numbers, not only the score on the board but the number of players and the number of fans that support the team. [But] I give the team a lot of credit for going into their games with seven or eight eligible athletes and battling as hard as their hearts allow them. While they may not have won right now, you should be proud they are Silverswords; their time will come.

As Vince Lombardi once said, “The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure. These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur.”

Warmest regards.
