Women love him—his brooding good looks, his amazing strength, and his razor sharp teeth. Men hate him—for all of those reasons and also because he is stealing the attention of women. Enter Edward Cullen, the main character of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight “series.
The series follows a human, Isabella Swan, and the hardships she faces when she falls in love with Edward, who is a non-human biting vampire.
Most people have heard of “Twilight,” but only because of the movie release in November 2008. Since it came out, the series has generated tons of hype. There are sweatshirts, posters, action figures, jewelry and handbags widely available. Anything “Twilight” fans could possibly want can probably be found with Edward’s or Isabella’s face on it.
Despite the mania from fans of “Twilight”, not everyone thinks that the series is all that and a bag of chips.
“I make fun of guys that read it. I tell them to put in a tampon,” laughs senior J. Anthony Garcia. “It’s like guys that watch ‘The Notebook.’”
“Anything that makes vampires glitter or glow is like ‘Are you serious?’” states junior Stacy Adora. “It’s not well written and the female character is almost too perfect for him and vice versa.”
But is “Twilight” supposed to be well written? Does it even matter, or is it just another novel about vampires?
“I don’t think that the book has any literary value. It is an entertainment book,” says junior Nonnie Guzman. “Just because something is popular doesn’t mean that it should get a Pulitzer.”
“It’s just an entertainment book, popular fiction actually,” says freshman Teuila Tauaese.
Like it or not, it’s everywhere. And more often than not, you will run into someone that loves “Twilight”, especially if it is a female.
“Not only is it a movie, but it’s a book. We get double the ‘Twilight!’ And Robert Pattinson is sexy!” says Tauaese.
I personally wish that the world that Meyers created is real, so that I can find a sexy vampire and have him turn me into a sparkly, strong, beautiful vampire.
I fully support “Twilight” mania, and do not care when people make fun of me for the huge poster of Edward hanging over my bed. I realize that to some, “Twilight” fanatics are ridiculous and dumb. But to those of you that think that “Twilight" fans are anything but amazing, I have two words for you.
Bite me.
