The Silversword: Home > Chimade Life > A Seminar on Photography and Education
Are you having trouble finding a fun class to sign up for next semester? Well, if you’re the type of person who enjoys taking pictures and working with kids, then COMM 380 is the class for you. This is a new course that will be offered in the spring semester of 2009. The class will teach students the art of photography, as well as viewing images through the eyes of the children the students will assist in this course. Rusty Kent, an adjunct professor at Chaminade, will teach the course alongside his wife and professional photographer, Minako Kent.
“We as adults can speak and write more eloquently than small children, but the jury is still out on who thinks at a higher level, both visually and creatively,” said Kent., "I firmly believe our best chance at solving the homeless problem in Hawaii is to tap into our greatest natural resource: the limitless potential of our young children. Stoking their creative energy is the first step."
The class will be held every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm in January. In February for four Saturdays, the students will make a trip out to Maili Land Transitional Housing in Waianae, run by Catholic Charities, where they will pair up with a child and be taken on a photography field trip. The seminar aims to show the Chaminade students that they can help these children in the littlest ways, and show them the potential that these kids could reach someday.
